BANNER ELK'S WINTER WONDERLAND

LEARNING TO SNOW SKI IN THE NC MOUNTAINS

BY DAVE KELLY

Wintertime is fast approaching. For Floridians, that means a break from the beastly summer heat – something to look forward to for sure. And for many of us who have roots in states a little further north, there is that one thing that we miss in the winter – the snow.

Memories of cozy nights by the fireplace. Of joyful winter days sledding and skiing. Of clear chilly nights taking in the starry sky and the crisp evening air.

Maybe you think you are too far away from times like these? Maybe you think you do not have the right warm clothing to play out in the snow?  Maybe you think that it is too late to learn to snow ski?

Then maybe it is time to think about the North Carolina town of Banner Elk.

Nestled between two world-class ski resorts in the scenic Blue Ridge Mountains, Banner Elk sits in North Carolina’s “High Country,” an area known for having the tallest mountain peaks east of the Rockies.  Just a day’s drive from most Florida locations, it calls to our state’s residents with its southern charm, its natural beauty, and its glorious winter activities.

We headed north during ski season, known to run from about Thanksgiving until the end of March each year.  As soon as we hit Banner Elk, we could see our accommodations, The Perry House Bed & Breakfast, perched high on a hill. Stepping onto their expansive front porch offered us sweeping snowy vistas of Sugar Mountain, Grandfather Mountain, and the city’s quaint downtown, which was just steps away.

We checked in and were immediately embraced by the warmth of inn owners Robin and Mike. Built in 1901, the Perry House is the perfect combination of turn-of-the-century southern charisma and modern amenities. The entire inn had a North Carolina country feel, with local master craftsmen designing the furnishings.

We stayed in the spacious Betsy room and were thrilled to see that our huge front window opened onto to a scenic view of the town and the mountain skyline beyond. Each morning, Mike utilizes his years of culinary expertise to personally craft breakfast for inn guests, specializing in warm casseroles and unique bakes. With his many years of experience in the area, he was also our go-to for recommendations on scenic views, tasty eateries – and exciting ski resorts.

On the first day of our stay, we opted for the scenic views, so we set off for Grandfather Mountain. After a quick bite at Mildred’s Grill, we toured their Wilson Center for Nature Discovery, located about halfway up the mountain near the outdoor wildlife habitats. It houses numerous interactive exhibits that helped us learn about the mountain’s ecology and history.

The highlight of the day was walking across the daunting Mile-High Swinging Bridge. Famous for being America’s highest suspension footbridge, this striking 228-foot architectural wonder spans an 80-foot chasm and is more than a mile from the bottom.  At well over 5,000 feet in elevation, we had 360-degree views of the area’s snowy mountain peaks. It was breathtaking in its scope and beauty.

After driving the scenic winding road back down the mountain, we explored another exciting winter activity – the Wilderness Run Alpine Coaster. Carved into the snowy mountainside, this impressive adventure consists of a zippy 5-minute roller coaster ride in your own individual vehicle. With the promise of climbing high into the mountain and coming down at speeds greater than 30mph, it sounded like the perfect introduction to speedy descents in the snow for our trip.

We all grabbed the ticket bundle, a special package allowing each of us to ride the coaster three times. Up the mountain we cranked, like a regular land coaster, but instead of a view of amusement park crowds, we were treated to a wintery mountain landscape everywhere we looked. We hit the top, tilted down, and sped off.

Each car is equipped with hand brakes to slow you if necessary, but it turns out we all felt the need for speed and headed down the coaster at full tilt. We hit bottom, jumped back in line, and did it all over again, reveling in the adrenaline rush. With dozens of twists and turns on the way down through the snow, it was a great lead-in to getting ready for the next day’s plans – learning to snow ski!

We were up early the next morning and took the quick 10-minute drive to Sugar Mountain Resort. It was exciting to know that, though nobody in our group had any experience snow skiing, there was no reason to be intimidated, as the resort had everything that we needed to enjoy a day in the snow. From private lessons to rentable ski equipment, beginners and experts alike can feel comfortable going to the resort and being prepared for their exciting runs.

Sugar Mountain Resort features over 125 acres of skiable terrain, with its 20 slopes accessible through multi-passenger chairlifts and kid-friendly magic carpet lifts.  Fourteen of the slopes are even lit for night skiing or snowboarding. With a summit elevation of 5,300 feet, Sugar boasts runs as long as a mile and a half with a vertical drop of over 1,200 feet.

Our group was set up together for a one-hour lesson at the Ski School, where we had a session tailored to our status as newbies. First, we were outfitted to the max. Every kind of equipment and clothing that we needed for skiing – boots, thermal overalls, and even the skis themselves - was available to us. Considering the investment one would make if this equipment were purchased simply for a one-time trip, it is one of the main reasons that we chose to ski at Sugar Mountain Resort.  And with an inventory of over two thousand complete sets of skis and boots, there is never a chance that they will run out.

Our instructor was knowledgeable and patient, and within the hour, we had all learned enough to venture out to the more challenging runs. We consulted the detailed maps, then teamed up and prepared to test our newfound talents. We encountered dozens of snowboarders too – they are welcome on all the slopes – and tackled runs as challenging as the intermediately-difficult Sugar Bear and more. The skiing was magnificent – the sun was shining, the sky was blue, and the powdery snow was picturesque and perfect.

Sugar Mountain Resort is more than just snow skiing. Folks of all ages were seen on the tubing run, sliding down the icy 700-foot hill, then taking the electric magic carpet back to the top to do it again. There is also a10,000 square-foot outdoor ice skating rink that offers rentable skates. We ended our day with hot chocolate as we sat in the Last Run Lounge and recounted the day’s fun.

The next morning, we took our new-found skiing talents to Beech Mountain Resort to show off our skills. The winding road to the summit took us through rustic Beech Mountain, the highest town in the Eastern U.S., then up to the resort itself. For over 50 years, this property has embraced mountain culture to become the whole experience when it comes to the winter outdoor lifestyle.

With a top elevation of 5506 feet, Beech Mountain Resort boasts the highest peak of any mountain range east of the Mississippi River. It is home to 17 slopes, the Freestyle Terrain snowboarding park, tubing runs, lodging, and plenty of dining options. They specialize in skiing lessons and clubs for kids, always emphasizing safety on the slopes.

Once again, we rented our outerwear and equipment and headed into the snow. After a few trips down the beginner tracks, a couple of us graduated to the intermediate trails, where we took in the scenery from the lifts on the way up and experienced thrills on the way down.

Rather than another round of hot cocoa after our outing, we opted to visit Beech Mountain Brewery. Owned and operated by the mountain resort, it sits in the middle of the village next to the huge ski shop and just steps from the lift area. This welcoming structure features almost two dozen beer styles and a cozy fireplace – the perfect atmosphere for enjoying our craft brews and catching up. We soon found ourselves succumbing to the Beech Mountain culture.

If you are ready to escape the Florida heat, enjoy some cool mountain air, and maybe even learn to ski, head to Banner Elk for a snowy fun time.
