The Other Side of St. Augustine

BEYOND THE HISTORY BOOKS

BY DAVE KELLY

The little historic city of St. Augustine Florida is many things. Folks visit to explore its fascinating history as the oldest continuously occupied city in the United States. Stunning Flagler College sits in the middle of town and contributes a cool college vibe. And the pedestrian-only St. George Street area attracts tourists from around the world to its restaurants, shops, and historic beauty. It truly is a destination worthy of a visit.

But the locals know that this growing town is more than just a stop for history buffs and tourists. There’s another side of St. Augustine – one that embraces outdoor adventure, warm quiet beaches, conservation initiatives, and farm-to-table goodness. Throw in unique outdoor events designed to entertain and enlighten, and you’ll see why discovering the other side of St. Augustine should be in your plans.

As home base for your trip, check out Crescent Beach, a sleepy little seaside community located just south of busy St. Augustine Beach. Close to the action but tucked away from the hustle and bustle, you’ll find Beacher’s Lodge, an affordable all-suites condo hotel property with rooms that can be rented out nightly, weekly, or even monthly. Each room is maintained and decorated by an individual owner, making for unique multi-room units that each have a character of their own. From cozy Studio Suites to spacious Group Suites with discounted rates for large parties, each unit has either a private porch or patio that faces directly onto their secluded beach for unmatched ocean views and stunning sunrises.

Each suite also features its own fully outfitted kitchenette area, complete with a full-sized refrigerator, stove, and dishes. And for those who like the freshwater lifestyle, there is a convenient oceanside temperature-regulated pool at the edge of the property to take a dip in. You will be amazed at how quiet Beacher’s shoreline is, with a gently curved ribbon of soft sand nestled between majestic dunes and the Atlantic Ocean. It’s the perfect spot to simply get away from it all in a serene outdoor atmosphere.

To immerse yourself in the splendor of St. Augustine’s natural surroundings while learning what you can do to help preserve them, hook up with GeoTrippin’ Adventure Company. Owner Ben Luis Brandao’s mission is to help people form a stronger connection to nature while inspiring them to get active in preserving the planet's living systems. He actively does this by personally hosting kayak trips through the Guana Tolomato Matanzas (or GTM) National Estuarine Research Reserve, a 76,000-acre estuary south of St. Augustine generally bordered by the Atlantic Ocean and the Intercoastal Waterway.

Ben immerses his guests in the area with several different kayak trips that discover dolphins, sea turtles, birds, and over 350 other animal species. GeoTrippin's main launch, at Genung's Fish Camp in Crescent Beach, offers a dynamic paddling experience where dolphins chasing schools of fish across the tidal lagoon are often sighted up close. There’s also the Low Tide Oyster Maze trip, an easy paddle where you can learn how the dozens of exposed oyster beds in the area help keep our marine ecology healthy and strong, as each tiny oyster filters and purifies 50 gallons of water every day. Ben even introduced sunset and night bioluminescence tours to the area – mind-blowing trips through the Guana Reserve that highlight glowing sea life such as jellyfish, dinoflagellates, and more. He also offers private kayaking lessons for those who want to learn for life. Ben knows that there is no better way to connect with the spirit of wild Florida than to be immersed in it on the water.

In keeping with the ecological feel of the area, check out the St. Johns Botanical Garden and Nature Preserve. Located just ten miles west of St. Augustine, this verdant destination sits on 17 acres of pristine land and is all about the conservation of rare and endangered species of plants from Florida and around the world. Founder and resident biologist Dr. John Rossi bought the land 22 years ago, cultivated it with love, then opened the SJBGNP in October of 2023, offering guided tours and programs to educate visitors on such topics as plant identification, xeriscaping, native plants conservation, transplanting, and dealing with invasive species.

Individuals and families can stop in, amble down paths leading past 300-year old oaks, and learn more by strolling around the gardens and discovering new plant varieties simply by studying the signs and ID markers around the preserve. The Gardens feature one of the largest collections of palms in the United States, with many of the 420 species known worldwide found on site, including all twelve that are native to Florida. John has collected most of these palms personally, calling it “a private collection that just got bigger over time.” His mission is to preserve and protect these unique and beautiful plants. There is a daily admission program, or you can opt for an annual membership that includes discounts in the Novelty Shop and the Plant Nursery. So check it out, enjoy the serene beauty, and support the beautiful, lush grounds.

Down the road from St. Johns Botanical Gardens and Nature Preserve sits The Feed Mill, a locally owned farm with the motto “Hay for Horses - Feed for Animals - Food for People.” In keeping with that approach, they specialize in fresh hay, equine feed, and …. well, pizzas! Chef Paul, owner of The Feed Mill, produces fresh ingredients on site, then mixes them up and serves them hot from the oven over crispy pizza crust at various times throughout the week. The pizzas are different each time, often incorporating unusual ingredients such as spinach, banana peppers, and even over-easy eggs. The pizzas are paid for through voluntary contributions only, so visitors simply donate to help the local cause.

The atmosphere is an amazing mix of local farm animals for kids to interact with, fresh produce sourced on site and regionally, and a homespun outdoor picnic-style theme. There is even a farm-to-table dinner twice a month at their Market at the Mill for folks to come out and enjoy. Take a trip to The Feed Mill farm and treat yourself to healthy and delicious meats, cheeses, produce, pet food, and more.

If you are looking for an excursion into the wild that is big on nature and education, check out Earth Kinship, a locally owned business that specializes in educational, sustainable, and ethical tourism throughout the area. Owner AyoLane Halusky uses his 25 years of professional experience and studies to motivate others to deepen their connection with the local environment by spending time in nature. Using the knowledge he gained from his position as the St. Johns County Naturalist, he offers a unique perspective on the local, natural environment.

AyoLane opened Earth Kinship three years ago, with the purpose of hosting kayak tours, nature hikes, and overnight excursions that inspire its guests to learn about our relationship with the earth. He then offers advice and ideas as to how to play an active role in creating positive life journeys and building sustainable communities. He ventures into more than a dozen areas throughout St. John’s County and beyond with his group kayak trips, helping guests to discover such lush yet diverse gems as Deep Creek, Mud Springs, and Six Mile Landing. AyoLane specializes in working with all levels of kayaker skills and provides the equipment needed for journeys of a few hours – or a few days.

For those who are festival lovers, there is definitely another side of St. Augustine. Throughout the year, Francis Field, the bustling event space located just west of Historic Downtown, is home to dozens of art festivals, fairs, concerts, food events, and more. Every spring, two of the biggest of them all bring thousands of enthusiastic fans to the area. The Romanza Festivale of Music and the Arts celebrates the vibrant culture and unique art scene that has shaped the history of St. Augustine. This two-week-long extravaganza features events such as live music, art walks, improv comedy, and classic theater, many of which are free to the public.

The crown jewel of the area’s outdoor events is the St. Augustine Celtic Music & Heritage Festival, held in early March every year and recently voted one of the top cultural festivals in the United States. Each year kicks off on Friday night with a whisky tasting, followed by two days of Celtic food and drink, historic arts and crafts, and the Highland Games competitions. A huge St. Patrick’s Day Parade winds its way through downtown St. Augustine on Saturday morning, commemorating the occasion of the world’s first-ever St. Patrick’s Day parade on the same spot over 400 years ago. The excitement continues each afternoon and evening with over a dozen performances by Celtic musicians and bands from around the world, both traditional and modern.

Make plans to get in touch with your outdoor side and visit The Other Side of St. Augustine.
